Connect Google Calendar or Outlook and pick which of your calendars come in. Share the family ones and keep the rest to yourself. Add any calendar with a subscribe link, like the school's, the team's or the trip's, and it stays up to date on its own.
Everything that comes in is read-only here. On a subscribed calendar a parent can recolour an event and choose who it shows for, and anything marked private shows as Busy.

Remind at the start, or from five minutes to a week before. It goes to the whole family unless you pick who, by push or email, whichever each person chose.
A push reminder for something they can take on today lets them accept it, or claim it first, right from the notification.
